Tasmanian Aboriginal people take been living within the Cradle Mountain area for more 35 000 years. They hunted game and nerveless nutrient plants with bone, rock and timber tools. There are numerous living sites within this rich cultural landscape that demonstrate continuing human occupation at high southern latitudes during the last ice age. They are testimony to the adaptation and survival of human societies to glacial climatic cycles and periods of long isolation from other communities. From the 1820s to the Park'southward announcement as a reserve in 1922, these Aboriginal homelands were visited by explorers, prospectors, trappers, hunters, timber getters and graziers. Proposals for the surface area varied from large mines and railways, to farms and plantations.

Notwithstanding, information technology was the vision of Austrian-born Gustav Weindorfer and his wife Kate which ultimately led to Cradle Mountain being declared a national park. 1912 saw the Weindorfers built a rustic dwelling house and guest chalet,​ 'Waldheim', at Cradle Valley. Weindorfer and a pocket-sized group of ardent supporters campaigned to have the area preserved and in May 1922 an area of 63 943 hectares was gazetted as Scenic Reserve.

Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park became a function of the Tasmanian Wilderness Earth Heritage Expanse in 1982.

Generally, this is 8:00am to vi:00pm every 10-15 minutes over summer (1 October to 31 March), and 9:00am to v:00pm every 15-20 minutes over winter (1 April to 30 September). Private vehicle admission

Visitors are advised that private vehicle access in the park is not permitted during shuttle bus operating ​times.​

The restriction for private vehicles will generally occur between the hours of ix:00am and 5:00pm each day over the winter menses - 1 April to xxx September; and 8:00am to vi:00pm over summer menses - one Oct to 31 March. Times are subject to alter, please ostend admission times with the visitor centre prior to your arrival.

Please annotation: Dove Lake car park restrictions due to shelter construction

During the construction of the new Dove Lake viewing shelter from April 2020 to Autumn 2022, there is no individual vehicle access past the Ronny Creek motorcar park or to Dove Lake.

Limited parking is available for private vehicles at Ronny Creek, still park access is only  permitted earlier or afterward shuttle bus functioning hours.

It is strongly advised that all visitors park at the visitor centre, validate their parks pass and take the shuttle bus service into the park.

Vehicle access into the park is only permitted outside of shuttle bus operating hours.

Limited parking is bachelor at Waldheim & Ronny Creek.

Company Middle and facilities

The visitor centre is open daily from viii.30am to four.30pm (hours are extended during peak periods) and provides information on walks and other activities in the area, as well every bit sales of parks passes and a range of souvenirs. The Overland Track cheque-in counter is located inside the visitor centre.

The Cradle Mountain Estimation Centre and Rangers Station is located merely inside the national park archway and features informative displays and an art gallery. The middle is open daily from 9.00 am to four.00 pm (hours are extended during tiptop periods).

Picnic shelters with electrical barbecues are adjacent the interpretation centre and rangers s​tation. There are also picnic tables at Waldheim, Ronny Creek and Dove Lake. A 24 hour cocky-service fuel bowser is available for use by visitors, accustomed payment methods are credit/debit cards only. Please notation that fuel may not exist available at all times. Staying overnight?

Please note on the Waldheim Cabins that the viii cabins provide simple and affordable lodgings where a number of not bad walking tracks radiate from your front door. Each cabin is equipped with electric heating, single bunk beds, basic cooking utensils, a small fridge, crockery, cutlery and a standard electrical stove. Tap h2o at the cabins is not potable. RVs caravans and trailers are non permitted on Dove Lake Road. Caravans and trailers may be un-hitched and parked in the main carpark at the Cradle Mountain visitor center. There is an afterhours primal collection service available.

Admission to Waldheim Cabins is strongly encouraged outside of shuttle autobus operating hours to ensure public prophylactic; however, access will exist permitted through the boom gate via authorised "swipe cards" which are programmed for set time periods if access is required during shuttle operating hours. If inbound during operating hours, guests must but enter and exit the park with shuttle coach escort. Please speak to Visitor Centre staff on your arrival if inbound during shuttle operating hours to receive education on how to follow entry and exit procedures.​

​​​​​Walker safety - alpine walks​​​​​​ (such as Cradle Mountain, Frenchmans Cap, Walls of Jerusalem, Southwest)

Weather weather in Tasmania can change quickly and frequently, particularly in alpine areas. Snow, pelting, wind and sun are all possible at any fourth dimension of the year, and bushfires can occur between October and March.

When visiting alpine areas you should include at a minimum, in add-on to your basic walking gear, a waterproof jacket with hood and storm front end (seam sealed and breathable fabric, Gore-Tex or similar), waterproof over trousers (seam sealed and breathable cloth​​, Gore-Tex or similar), sturdy walking boots and warm vesture (a fleece or woollen jumper, thermal base layers, chapeau and gloves).

Deaths have occurred when people have been caught unprepared in cold, moisture and windy weather. Children, older people and those with an affliction or disability are at the greatest risk in such conditions.

The Cradle Mountain Gateway features a modern fully accessible company middle, gift shop, cafĂ©, bout operators, hole-and-corner picnic area, two amenity blocks and a showtime help room. ​​​​​​

The majority of the Cradle Mountain shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible. These buses travel regularly from the visitor centre to the interpretation eye, and on to Dove Lake.  There are attainable toilets located at the Dove Lake carpark.​

The Rainforest Walk, (starting at the interpretation heart and Ranger Station), is an all-weather boardwalk and suitable for most contained wheelchair users.
